Weltklasse Zürich to host Wanda Diamond League Finals in 2021 and 2022 instead of September 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Weltklasse Zürich 2020 cannot be held as Wanda Diamond League finals this year. The three-day event had been scheduled for 9 to 11 September. Instead, Zurich will host the series’ final events in 2021 and 2022. Despite the fact that the Swiss Federal Council has banned large events only until the end of August, staging the finals in their intended form is unrealistic. The Zurich promoters are not burying their heads in the sand, however. Weltklasse Zürich is working hard to create novel platforms for this year.

A run for everyone – a starting signal for all of Switzerland

1 million kilometres in 48 hours: After restrictions against the spreading of the coronavirus have been eased, people in Switzerland will be running together again. Things may just be a bit different for the time being. The OneMillionRun (30 and 31 May) will therefore be unlike any other sports event, both in its setup and its scope.

Weltklasse Zürich has big plans for 2020: As host of the Wanda Diamond League Finals, Zurich is in the midst of preparing for a three-day athletics spectacle with no less than 24 final events on Sechseläutenplatz, at Main Station, and at Letzigrund Stadium. At this time, it is unclear, to what extent the coronavirus crisis will influence the complex organisation of the event scheduled for 9 to 11 September. The next weeks will show whether - despite potential additional requirements and challenges – Weltklasse Zürich 2020 can be held as planned.

«New Spheres»: Three Days, 24 Finals

With its 2020 edition, the world’s most prestigious athletics meeting is entering new spheres: As host of the final event of the Wanda Diamond League, Weltklasse Zürich will stage 24 events (instead of 16 as in previous years). There will be three days of competition – and three venues: Sechseläutenplatz, the city’s famous square by the lake, Zurich Main Station, and Letzigrund Stadium.

Diamond League Meetings 2020 dates announced

The General Assembly of the IAAF Diamond League has announced the dates of all meetings for the coming season. The most important competition series in athletics will now include 14 meetings and the final at Weltklasse Zurich.

German athletics legend Martin Lauer has died

The former German hurdler Martin Lauer died at the age of 82. Lauer was responsible for the first two world records in the Letzigrund stadium.
