Three world record holders already confirmed

No man jumped higher than Renaud Lavillenie. No woman throwed a javelin farther than Barbora Špotáková. No woman ran faster at 3000m steeple than Beatrice Chepkoech. It is already clear that Weltklasse Zürich will welcome at least three current world record holders. At least, because the confirmation of the qualified athletes has only just begun. Nevertheless, the first names already prove it: At Weltklasse Zürich, the final stage of performance improvement will be reached once more. The best of the best will meet at the Athletics summit on 29 August 2019.

Pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie is the record winner of IAAF Diamond League Trophies. The 2012 Olympic champion has already won the coveted Diamond Trophy seven times. The world’s most important meeting series will only be ten years old this year. The 6.16m jumper suffered his first defeat in the battle for overall victory in 2017 at the Letzigrund stadium – against Sam Kendricks. The reigning world champion has already confirmed his start too. Just a few days ago Kendricks improved to 6.06m and is now the second best outdoor pole vaulter of all times. Thiago Braz, another Olympic champion, is one competitor for the two superstars.

Luvo Manyonga wants the Triple

Long-jump world champion Luvo Manyonga could repeat his success of the previous year at Weltklasse Zürich in 2018. As reigning Diamond League Champion, the South African is aiming for his third consecutive victory. Olympic champion Jeff Henderson will be a strong competito in the series. In addition, further distance hunters are expected to make Manyonga’s mission of defending the title more difficult. The hunt for distance also drives Thomas Röhler. The Olympic javelin throw champion expects not only strong opponents, but also loud support from the German neighbouring country.

Sprinter Dina Asher-Smith is one of the most popular athletes. The three-time European Champion of 2018 is the first competitor for the fastest Swiss sprinter Mujinga Kambundji. The 800m runner Nijel Amos seemed almost unrivalled at last. With 1:41,89min he came dangerously close to his own best time and indicated that it could soon be history. At the moment he is in third place with his best time.
