The Wanda Diamond League takes off in Europe

Road to Zurich picks up speed

After a furious start in Asia and Africa with meetings in Xiamen, Shanghai/Keqiao, Doha and Rabat, the Wanda Diamond League is now coming to Europe – and with it the decisive phase of the Road to Zurich begins. Next weekend, the world’s athletics elite will meet in Rome before the series moves on to Oslo and Stockholm. Three meetings within ten days in iconic cities that will set the course for the grand final at Weltklasse Zürich at the end of August.

Record-breaking atmosphere, full stadiums and digital reach

The four stops so far have set new standards: Two Wanda Diamond League records, 13 national records, 23 meeting records and 16 world year’s best performances made for an auspicious start to the season. The stadiums were full and the atmosphere was electric – a strong signal for the popularity of athletics.

Weltklasse Zürich, a prestigious final host with a long-standing tradition and a driver of innovation on the international stage, is not only part of the athletics boom – it is also actively driving it forward with a broad social commitment. Another clear sign of enthusiasm: tickets for the final evening at Letzigrund Stadium were sold out within just two hours.

Swiss stars on the international stage

Some of Switzerland’s strongest track and field athletes will also be competing in Rome. Dominic Lobalu, who became European champion at the same venue in 2024, is returning as a title holder and will face strong competition in the 1500m. He recently showed his top form in Doha, where he finished second in his favourite distance of 5000m. Jason Joseph, who has also been in great form this season, is aiming for another top performance in the 110 metre hurdles.

Simon Ehammer will be travelling with a tailwind from Götzis, where he improved his own Swiss decathlon record last weekend – including a strong performance in the long jump. He will now attack in his favourite discipline in Rome. Angelica Moser, who became European pole vault champion in Rome in 2024, will also be competing against a top-class field. SRF broadcasts the competitions live – and brings the performances of the Swiss figureheads directly into your living room.

The Wanda Diamond League – a stage for top global performances

Since its foundation in 2010, the Wanda Diamond League has been the leading meeting series in athletics. It comprises 15 top-class events in 13 countries on four continents and offers athletes from 32 disciplines a platform at world-class level. From April to August, they compete for points to qualify for the season finals.

Only the best make it to the grand final at Weltklasse Zürich, which this year begins on 27 August with a city event on Sechseläutenplatz and culminates on 28 August at Letzigrund Stadium. There, in a ‘winner takes it all’ format, it will be decided who wins the Diamond Trophy and record prize money – and also secures a wildcard for the World Championships.

The European summer begins – and Zurich is the destination

With the upcoming meetings in Rome, Oslo and Stockholm, the hot phase of the season is now beginning in Europe. The athletes will give their all to secure their place in the final – a highlight of the season that will set new standards in both sporting and emotional terms. The Wanda Diamond League proves week after week that this sport is alive and kicking – powerful, passionate and with global impact.
