Nadezhda Ostapchuk Winning a Diamond Trophy at Zurich Main Station
Zurich Main Station – a Weltklasse Zürich venue: The inaugural Samsung Diamond League final was an extraordinary event at an unusual location. European Champion Nadezhda Ostapchuk won the very first Diamond Trophy in the history of the new meeting series.
Ostapchuk was performing in a class of her own, wowing both hundreds of spectators on the stands and passersby. Ostapchuk’s shot landed at 20.63m, beating the best attempt by Olympic and world champion Valerie Adams-Vili’s of 20.02 convincingly. Adams-Vili was the only athlete in a position to threaten Ostapchuk’s overall lead. The athlete from Belarus, however, accomplished her goal of winning the sixth of her six Samsung Diamond League competitions. “Winning the Diamond Race is like winning a world championship,” Ostapchuk said. “And the final event was a great experience. I enjoyed the music, and of course the audience being so close to the ring.”
The athletes of the men’s shot put were benefitting from the special atmosphere, as well: World champion Christian Cantwell (USA) won the event (21.87m), his fellow countryman Adam Nelson came in second place.
