Aiming high in the heart of the city: Weltklasse Zürich on Sechseläutzenplatz

The Wanda Diamond League Final 2022 will begin on Sechseläutenplatz, right in the heart of Zurich, on 7 September 2022.

Switzerland’s European indoor champion Angelica Moser and her colleagues will be flying high in the pole vault, just like the athletes in the men’s long jump. Visitors get to watch the two 2021 Olympic champions from up close: Gianmarco Tamberi and Mutaz Essa Barshim are both on the illustrious list of athletes trying to claim this year’s Diamond Trophy.

As last year, the 5000m races will lead athletes around the Zurich Opera House on a Conica track installed for the event. The line-ups for both races are impressive: In the women’s race, 2021 winner Francine Niyonsaba, Olympic champion Sifan Hassan and world champion Gudaf Tsegay will make sure their race has onlookers biting their nails. The men’s race in the truly unique setting features the likes of 10000m Olympic champion Selomon Barega and defending Wanda Diamond League champion Berihu Aregawi.

Fans are in for some powerful action in the shot put circle of the temporary arena near the lakefront. 2021 winner, Olympic champion and world record holder Ryan Crouser will be facing a duel with Joe Kovacs and a line-up filled with the world’s best shot putters. And all eyes will be on world champion Chase Ealey challenging European champion Jessica Schilder in the women’s event.

Starting 3.30p.m., visitors will have access to the arena on Sechseläutenplatz (free admission) where national competitions get underway at 4.30p.m. The international programme of event will begin at 5p.m., with SRF zwei covering competitions live as of 5.30. There will be a worlwide live broadcast of the event.

“We are delighted to return to Sechseläutenplatz to present six exciting Wanda Diamond League final events that feature the world’s best athletes. Being able to celebrate Weltklasse Zürich in the heart of the city is wonderful,” Co-Meeting Director Andreas Hediger comments on the upcoming city event he and his team have been meticulously preparing for months.

„We would like to give visitors an opportunity to get a closer look at our sport. Athletics has captured the attention of people all around the country recently. We provide free access to standing areas so that visitors can enjoy both the action from up close and experience the famous Weltklasse Zürich atmosphere,” Co-Meeting Director Christoph Joho adds.

The few seats available on the stands of the arena were sold out quickly, including the ones for the very special UBS Kids Cup family zone right at the centre of Sechseläutzenplatz, that allows families to be very close to the stars.

Everyone interested in the sport and the competitions can access standing areas close to the various events via two bridges across the temporary track. The promoters recommend using public transport to get to Sechseläutenplatz. Bahnhof Stadelhofen and several tram stops are located just a few steps from the venue.
