Some 2000 spectators will get to cheer and to gasp at Zurich Main Station. And the athletes will no doubt also treat them to some goose bumps during their breathtaking airshow at the unique temporary arena. <\/p>\n
All of the 450 seats have been sold, but a standing area next to the pole vault pit (free admission) will allow passersby and commuters to get close to the action of one of the most fascinating athletics events. The competition in the city centre is a wonderful opportunity to experience the sport in a highly entertaining show and a modern setting that somewhat resembles a beach volleyball court. A truly special event, both for spectators and for the athletes, who will be performing to their favourite tune for once.<\/p>\n
Their focus, however, will \u2013 as always \u2013 be on performing at top level. Nicole B\u00fcchler, who raised the Swiss national indoor record to 4.80m earlier this year and placed sixth in Rio, will be facing some of her strongest opponents. Seven finalists of the Olympic Games will compete at the majestic ticket hall, including new champion Ekaterini Stefanidi (Greece) and silver medallist Sandi Morris (USA).<\/p>\n
Nicole B\u00fcchler will not be the only one performing in front of her home crowd, as Switzerland\u2019s 18-year-old U20 world champion Angelica Moser is determined to demonstrate her huge talent in a competition against the best athletes of the season. <\/p>\n
The entry list also includes European championship silver medallist Lisa Ryzih (Germany), former world championship silver medallist Martina Strutz (Germany), as well as former European champion Ji\u0159ina Pt\u00e1\u010dn\u00edkov\u00e1 (Czech Republic). <\/p>\n
Nicole B\u00fcchler already knows what it feels like to compete at Zurich Main Station. She coached her husband Mitch Greeley last year, enjoying the unique setting: \u201cThe atmosphere in the ticket hall was fantastic. And now, it\u2019s my turn to compete here. That\u2019s just wonderful,\u201d said the 32-year-old local star.<\/p>\n
Pole vault most successfully premiered at Weltklasse Z\u00fcrich at Zurich Main Station with the men\u2019s competition in 2015. Between 2011 and 2013, it had been the shot putters who took athletics to the city centre and put the Zurich fans in the mood for the IAAF Diamond League final at Letzigrund Stadium.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s pole vault show on Wednesday will be covered live for the first time, by SRF zwei and online in a live stream for viewers around the world (31 August, 6.30pm). The event starts with the athletes\u2019 warm-up at 5.30pm, the competition will be underway one hour later. As always, Weltklasse Z\u00fcrich mascot Cooly will be among the spectators, as one of the athletes\u2019 biggest fans. <\/p>\n
